چکیده
OBJECTIVE To identify if anisometropic amblyopia is associated with changes in optic disk morphology. METHODS The study comprised a total of 80 eyes recruited from Shifa Foundation Community Health Centre and the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, Islamabad between May and October 2012. Anisometropic amblyopia was the only cause of disability (visual acuity > or = 6/12) in amblyopic eyes whereas normal eyes had a best corrected visual acuity of 6/6 and no morbidities. Patients with other causes of amblyopia, co-morbid ocular diseases, and in whom a good-quality image could not be obtained were excluded. Mean retinal nerve fiber layer thickness was analysed using Heidelberg retina tomograph. Analysis of frequency distribution, probability and regression were run on the data collected during the study using SPSS version 15.0. RESULTS The mean age of the patients was 23.85 +/- 5.85 years. The retinal nerve fibre layer thickness ranged between 0.09 mm and 0.35 mm (mean: 0.23 mm +/- 0.07) in amblyopic eyes, and between 0.18 mm and 0.36 mm (mean: 0.25 mm +/- 0.05) in normal eyes. The difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.087). No association was found between the retinal nerve fiber layer thickness or the age and refractive error of patients. CONCLUSION The optic disk does not appear to be the site of morphological changes in amblyopia.

Optic disc measurements using the Heidelberg Retina Tomograph in amblyopia
PURPOSE To investigate the characteristics of optic disc parameters in amblyopic eyes in which retinal involvement is uncertain. METHODS A total of 44 patients with a history of unilateral amblyopia (27 patients with persistent amblyopia and 17 patients with resolved amblyopia) were examined using the Heidelberg Retina Tomograph (HRT) II. Parameters examined included disc area, cup area, cup ...
متن کاملThicknesses of macular retinal layer and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer in patients with hyperopic anisometropic amblyopia.
This prospective study was performed to measure the macular and the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thicknesses using optical coherence tomography (OCT) in patients with anisometropic amblyopia. Thirty-one patients with hyperopic anisometropic amblyopia were included. The macular retinal thickness and the peripapillary RNFL thickness were measured using OCT. The mean refractive e...

Objectives. This study compared the macular and retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) thicknesses and optic nerves of eyes with reduced vision due to anisometropia with the contralateral healthy eyes in adults using optical coherence tomography (OCT). Methods. This cross-sectional study was conducted in Atatürk State Hospital, Sinop, Turkey. Macular and RNFL thicknesses, optic nerve disc area, cup a...
متن کاملThickness of retinal layers in the foveas of children with anisometropic amblyopia
PURPOSE To use highly precise spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) to determine whether there were structural abnormalities in the layers of different regions of the fovea in children with anisometropic amblyopia. METHODS Eighteen children (mean age 7.8 years old; range 5-11 years) with unilateral anisometropic amblyopia and 18 age-matched control subjects participated. Fovea...
متن کاملSimultaneous Pattern Visual Evoked Potential and Pattern Electroretinogram in Strabismic and Anisometropic Amblyopia
BACKGROUND Amblyopia is a relatively common condition in which visual acuity through an eye is subnormal despite no overt pathology. Pattern visual evoked potential (PVEP) can detect any defect from optic nerve to occipital cortex and pattern electroretinogram (PERG) can detect retinal defects specially the ganglion layers. This study was performed to evaluate the cortical and retinal activity ...
